Modern Agricultural Mechanisation Centre
The potential for agriculture, as a real means for livelihood security, remains largely untapped because the people do not have the expertise and resources to effect the needed change. Although small scale rural farmers desire to adopt modern methods of production through the use of machines, they are constrained either by the non availability of the machines in their locality or the non affordability of the services of such machines.
As part of the company's vision to improve the socio-economic wellbeing of small scale rural farmers, B-BOVID runs a well equipped agricultural mechanization centre which supports small scale farmers with modern agricultural machines at subsidized rates. This is the first of its kind in the western region.
Food Processing Centre
This involves the establishment of a vegetable oil and food processing factory at Apowa/Pretsea Nkwanta near Takoradi, the regional capital of the Western Region of Ghana, as an upward linkage to the company’s farming activities in the region.
As part of this initiative, the company is contributing significantly to job and wealth creation and poverty reduction in poor communities. The CEO of the company, Mr. Issa Ouedraogo believes that “the wellbeing and the prosperity of the people in the rural communities should be the concern of all”. As such, the company has introduced a concept of “from Soil to the Table” This ensures that the business and the communities grow together by creating a number of opportunities through Innovation and Climate-Smart Agriculture. The establishment of the processing centre is creating economically viable opportunities for the rural people as consumers, suppliers, distributors, and employees through the provision of logistics and skills training.
After supporting small scale farmers to improve the quality of their produce B-BOVID provides ready market for their produce by buying them for further processing. This practice is effective in increasing the income level of small scale farmers; gives them a reliable source of livelihood and also serves as a source of sustainable growth for their business. Additionally, this will reduce the losses and indebtedness of farmers who otherwise would have incurred losses and debts due to poor market for their produce, which often is the cause of poverty in rural communities.
The third phase of the value chain business is the recycling of the waste and by-products from the plantation and the factory into organic fertilizer and organic animal feed. B-BOVID supplies the fertilizers and animal feed to farmers at reduced prices.
ICT in Agriculture Training Centre to boost small scale productivity
In the wake of the importance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in addressing the challenges of small scale farmers and improving the livelihood of the rural poor, B-BOVID is establishing a modern ICT centre where small scale farmers and the youth would be trained and supported to use ICT to improve productivity. The project is expected to help small scale farmers in rural communities to improve their production, access the market and create a platform for knowledge and information sharing. Moreover, it would assist in building their capacity, reduce social isolation and make agriculture a more efficient and prosperous venture. The centre will be the first of its kind in Ghana, if not in West Africa.
B-BOVID, working in association with its field partners, TRACTOR (Transforming Rural Agriculture Communities Through Organic Re-engineering), an NGO, and other international development agencies, would engage communities in the use of modern farming Technology and Information and Communication Technology to boost inclusive and sustainable commercial farming in the region.
