Ecological Agriculture, Biodiversity and Climate Change
Safe and Smart Climate Agriculture
The effects of climate change on the environment and human lives are dire. There is the need for urgent measures on climate change mitigation and adaptation. However, this will require renewed public and private interest and investment in low carbon emissions and climate-friendly regulations.
B-BOVID is undertaking efficient agricultural and environmental practices effective in conserving the environment and mitigating climate change. The company practices biodiversity, soil functions, conservation of water tables and organic farming. It avoids the use of toxic chemicals and pesticides, thus reducing the quantity of harmful carbon-dioxide released into the atmosphere. The company populates its fields with tree crops, cover crops and forest to reduce carbon emissions.
Processing and Utilisation of Oil Palm Fronds ( a waste) and Palm Cake (a by-product) as a Source of Organic Animal feed
Oil palm fronds contain fibre, protein, vitamins and chlorophyll among others that when mixed with palm cake provides cost efficient balanced ruminant diet that enhances animal health and growth. It is an approach that combines sustainable ecological animal production and integrated natural resource management to increase food productivity while reducing carbon emissions.
As part of the company’s recycling policy and the concept of from “Soil to the Table”, B-BOVID has acquired an oil palm frond shredder that would be used to process and make use of oil palm fronds (waste) and palm cake (by-product) into organic animal feed. Oil-palm fronds have been successfully used as a substitute for tropical grass by ruminant rearers in Malaysia and Indonesia. B-BOVID wishes to introduce and promote this technology in Ghana as part of an integrated crop, livestock and fish farming system.
